Are your days getting away from you as you start to process what it might be like to have a fully thought through home?
What is your next step once you get to the base point of knowing what you want to keep, and what really needs to go?
So often I hear…
It is incredible when you realize you have underutilized square footage that can be better utilized with a swap of furnishings and a newly identified purpose. It’s like putting on a FREE addition!
Filling a space purposefully and keeping it in order each day is life-changing.
If you are already taking advantage of my Top 20 List, you are starting to see how some of the most obvious steps to making your house feel like home are some that you haven’t fully addressed yet.
#4 Give every room a purpose.
#5 Furnish every room.
#6 Make the beds.
It is nearly impossible to make your house feel like home before you address a functional purpose for every space, and these ALL come BEFORE you really dive into design.
Does every room in your house already have a purpose? Are there spaces that feel redundant or never used? Are there areas that rarely get human interaction?
I’m all for efficient design. I love coming up with better ways to utilize space and not feeling like a room needs to stay stagnant for a decade. Never settle for another sitting room if your family doesn’t actually sit much.
Think through how you would ideally use each space, and THEN have fun furnishing it for that use!
NEXT, decide what would make all of your rooms feel the most put together. “Making the beds” is one of those bigger picture concepts that has the ability to set your mind at ease with a home that is always ready for guests, or simply eases your stress level when it is done.
1. Process how you use each space in your house.
If a room feels lifeless, it likely needs a new purpose.
2. Nothing is set in stone.
Move your furniture around. Create fresh combinations of existing furnishings that you have not placed together before.
3. Don’t settle in with what you have seen before.
Continue to search for inspiration that feels a touch outside of the box and serves your home in a more personalized way.
4. Get the most out of your furnishing investments.
Choose pieces that are versatile and could work within multiple rooms or function differently depending on how you want to use the space they are in.
5. Stage your home before you walk out the door.
Make the beds. Clear the counters. Compile the remaining “pile”. Fluff the sofa pillows. Fold the blankets. Throw the excess into a basket. Straighten it all. This is a QUICK process when it becomes routine and EVERYTHING has a place.
6. Take a deep breath when you walk back in the door.
You will gain a massive sense of relief when you have a fresh base to start your next design project!

These initial steps are SO critical to transforming your house into a fully thought through dream home. Take the time to back it up for a minute, and really get a fresh feel for what you LOVE about your house, and how you would LOVE to use every space to its fullest.
