Welp, I’m here to tell you there is a first for everything!
These two components of design may actually be the only critical items you are missing when processing how to design your space.
Let me guess, it is easy for you to gravitate towards an aesthetic you like. It is not the most difficult thing in the world for you to sit on a sofa and determine if it is comfortable or not. It is likely second nature for you to add something (or a lot of things) to your cart from the home goods aisles at Target – how does that happen so fast??
BUT, if you haven’t processed the scale and volume of your space before making a handful of loosey goosey design decisions, there is a pretty solid chance your return cart is growing 🥴
Oh, man… I have maybe struck a chord?
If you haven’t drawn up a very literal scaled plan of your space, it’s time. Grab a piece of graph paper, a pencil, a ruler, and a tape measure and make that plan happen! Get to know your space on a 2D and 3D level. Sit in your space, take it all in. What is your vision? Now put that vision on paper TO SCALE!
I’m talking 2 squares on that graph paper = 1 foot of real space! Let’s draw up our dreams and make them happen. There is not a professional designer on the planet who is not thinking about scale and volume, and if these are the two things you have been missing from your design process, I just might have given you the ticket to designing a thoughtful space without another return! 🥳
We LOVE that addressing the scale and volume of your room was one of the most eye opening modules for The MMDH Furnishing Method beta group.
Filling a space visually while furnishing it is something I learned in school and have been honing in on for well over a decade.
It is a game changer when you shift your mindset FROM “just buying furniture” TO furnishing the full volume of your space… floor to ceiling, wall to wall 👌
No matter how much volume your space has, there is a great chance you are not maximizing every vertical inch.
There are a lot of rules when it comes to maximizing the full volume of your space, but the most important one is to USE IT!
Don’t stop designing your room after you placed furniture:
✔️hang artwork
✔️treat your windows
✔️accessorize
✔️fill those vertical voids
…and do it all thoughtfully, thinking through the entire space, not just your floor plan.
You can start by refurnishing a room to make it REALLY you, or you can start by bringing in a single piece of artwork that does the same.
The key is to start with something, so you can stop staring down blank walls and start designing yourself a thoughtful home… one space at a time.
