When was the last time you added a layer to your home? If your answer involved a question mark or wide eyes, it’s time to get cozy! Here are 5 simple steps to make your house more cozy.
HOT TIP: Everything comes together when you add layers! 😉
Layering is one of the easiest and most impactful ways to make your house feel like a true home, even in the heat of summer. Imagine every inch of your home feeling cozy, from the depths of winter to the peak of summer.
Ready to transform your space? First, let’s bust some myths about how to make your house more cozy.
Look around your house. Does it give you all of the cozy feels? The secret I’m sharing this week is that: it should! We’re talking the 5 ways to make your house feel more cozy.
Let’s clear up a common myth: You do not need to be ready for a gut renovation. Nor do you need to be ready for a furnishing refresh. You just need to be willing to add a handful of thoughtful layers.
We’re moving right along through my Top 20 List. We’ve purged through the excess, organized the goodness, collected fresh personality, and added color. Now, it’s time to layer it up for ultimate coziness!
Buying throw blankets with fringe is straightforward. Fringe adds interest, and you might as well have layers that add interest 👌🏻 Really, the chunkier the throw, the better. The bigger and more textural the throw, the better. Vary throw blankets throughout a space in color, texture, material, and pattern. We load up on blankets for cool evenings on the patio—no shortage around here!
To help you get started, check out our Amazon storefront where we have a whole board dedicated to throw blankets. Here are a couple of our favorites:

Place one folded over the arm or back of your chair or sofa. Lay one folded across your ottoman or bench with a tray on top of it. Drape one over the corner of the sectional with throw pillows layered in front of it to avoid it needing to be the “perfect” drape. Roll a few throws with fringe exposed in a basket next to the sofa. They don’t have to match. They kind of need to coordinate. Don’t over-think it.
They are really just a clutch reference point. Grab a few magazines with great graphic covers from the grocery store. Stack them up on a side table under a coaster, or under a lamp. Add books… we’ve talked about books! They are a hugely flexible layer to work with and these layers will make your house feel more cozy!
Play around with a single piece of artwork leaning on a table or a mantle (100% zero commitment with this method). Place a vase or a candlestick in front of it. Lean a smaller piece of artwork against a corner of it. If The front artwork slips, place something behind it to hold it in place. Great design you see in magazines is a lot of smoke and mirrors. Layers hide imperfections in magazines, and in real life!
Pattern, more than texture, is sometimes hard to gain a comfort level with. Mixing patterns can get overwhelming quickly. Take small chances with book covers, artwork, blankets, pillows. You may surprise yourself with your growing comfort level, as you see how these smaller items start to mix in your space. You can then dive into bolder rug and furniture selections. A stair step approach to layering is a great thing. Feel out the process. Add at your own pace. But ultimately, ADD!
