Finding Inspiration: Our Home Project Vision at MMDH HQ

We’re due for a design refresh over here at MMDH HQ. Actually, an overhaul of our home project updates, but let’s ease ourselves in, shall we? You may assume that every interior designer lives in the home of their dreams, down to every last detail. The truth is, it’s a journey for all of us, friends. Designers see a lot of specification options in a day, and for some reason, it creates more overwhelm when we are designing for ourselves vs. designing for you!

So, here we are, over a decade after moving into this home/MMDH headquarters, and we’ve been on a design hiatus for way too long. These home project updates are long overdue. Sure, we are shifting artwork, adding to our collections, and re-stacking coffee table books on the daily; but we haven’t refreshed the base finishes in this place for almost a solid eight plus years. It’s time.

So, here’s our game plan:

Refresh base finishes (walls, ceilings, and floors) to lighten up the backdrop of this home and allow it to evolve and inspire us everyday ✅

• Our first step is general lighting, and it is happening as I type. We are adding can lighting in two under-lit rooms. While I love avoiding can lights where possible, our current living room and dining room/home office spaces will both function much more effectively as the multi-use rooms they need to be with additional light level options.
• The second step will be millwork. This is a bit up in the air at the moment, as there is a chance we will purchase pre-fabricated pieces, since they will ultimately be painted and are filling fairly basic voids. Stay tuned for more details here!

The Most Impactful Home Project Updates

• Paint will come next (quote approved moments ago) to give us extensive coverage on base painting. My Clorox wipes aren’t doing the trick anymore on this nearly decade old paint coverage.
• The ceilings will be painted where new can lights and retrofit can light kits are being installed.
• Trim will be refreshed throughout.
• Doors and stairs are getting a much more lively color coat than they have ever seen before (see all inspo above)!
• And the floors, YES, even the wood floors are going to get a little paint and stain love (keep scrolling for the inspo below)!! Eventually we will get to painting our kitchen cabinets that can be seen from nearly every vantage point on the first floor… likely not in this round, but that project is coming soon enough and will be well worth staying tuned for 👀

The Most Exciting Home Project Updates

Yes, there is more. The icing on the cake elements to bring all of the fresh paint finishes together… AND add the MMDH vibes that motivate us, always:

• Wallpaper
• Decorative light fixture swaps
• Window treatments

I consider these the earrings on the room. They are the elements that may not seem like they are entirely necessary, but a room can feel very naked without them. Similar to me realizing halfway to an event that I left my earrings on the counter… like, pull over at CVS stat, so I can grab the rest of my outfit!

These three items will take our home project updates to the next level. They will ultimately be the elements that bring personality into our home refresh. There will be no question of positive vibes and energy when you walk in our front door… and I CANNOT WAIT!
