Do you ever see potential in a room but freeze when it comes to bringing it to life? A thoughtfully designed room at its maximum potential can make you sit back, relax, and smile. It can energize you and give you a fresh outlook on the day. A well-designed room creates positive vibes, always! Wouldn’t it be amazing to maximize your surroundings to their full potential?
Interior design is one of the most impactful yet overlooked trades. A home never truly lives up to its potential without thoughtful interior design. And guess what? Interior design doesn’t need to be a luxury—it should be accessible to everyone.
If you’re frozen in your tracks when it comes to home design, this post is for you! Here are three ways to maximize your room’s potential.
Maximizing any room’s potential is easier than you think. These three simple tips are achievable for any homeowner. A thoughtfully designed room starts with gathering inspiring images, analyzing them, and integrating the elements you love into your own space.
For example, the room shown above captivated me with its tone-on-tone blue baseboard, walls, and bookshelves. It’s all simply paint, yet it establishes a cohesive and thoughtfully designed foundation. Layers of furnishings and accessories are then added one at a time, incorporating details like pattern play, textural neutrals, eclectic eras, curves, and clean lines. The tone-on-tone background seamlessly ties everything together.
Without further ado, let’s explore the 3 ways to maximize your room’s potential 👇
The first way to maximize your room’s potential is to think bigger. It starts with a shift in mindset. Don’t limit your thoughts on what you can accomplish in your home. You might worry about spending too much money or going too bold. Maybe you’re unsure about taking a chance on something outside of your comfort zone, or your ceilings aren’t as high as your inspiration images.
Don’t let any of this hold you back. Mix high and low finishes, find dupes, and achieve the overall vibe on a tighter budget. You’ll never regret taking a risk to get an aesthetic you love in your home! Embrace the mentality that your home has something special to offer.
Pro Tip: Paint your walls pink if you love pink 👆
It’s never too late to start collecting inspiration and layers for your home. To maximize any room’s potential, gather thoughtful inspiration and dive into why you love it. You might have held off on home design projects because your family is evolving, or daily life takes priority. The most common reason I hear is not knowing where to start.
To maximize your home’s potential, dedicate some time to inspiration. We’ve developed a mini-course called The MMDH Mood Board Method (it’s FREE here!) to guide you through gathering design inspiration that will drive your home furnishing projects forward. Take an hour or two each week to gather inspiration, and always be on the lookout for thoughtful layers of furnishings and accessories.
Collections of items you love naturally lead to layers in your home, making it feel established and complete. If your home needs larger pieces of furniture, start with a base collection of items you really love [scale each piece appropriately for your room!]. Once you have the base pieces, fill in the voids with smaller furnishings. Finally, style your space with artwork and accessories.
We’ve filmed an entire 6-module course called The MMDH Furnishing Method (BUY it here!) to walk you through my process of collecting thoughtful furnishing layers for one room at a time. This course will give you confidence, motivation, and insight from other homeowners working through similar projects [including me!].
We’re building a digital platform and community to help homeowners like you make any house a thoughtfully designed home, one room at a time.
Pro Tip: Buy items you love when you least expect to find them. As soon as you start looking for a specific piece, it’s always harder to find.
I love finding “free” square footage in a client’s home! Rooms that were missing their purpose and spaces that aren’t being utilized to their full potential are perfect for transformation. This happens when you push further, think outside the box, and fall in love with your home. Let us know when you’re ready—Team MMDH is here for it!
